Proofreading
For those of you who are unsure whether your text requires proofreading or editing, the easiest way to describe proofreading is to say that it is the final step after editing that any text should go through prior to submission or publication.
Proofreading involves checking for mistakes in grammar and spelling, as well as punctuation and syntax. In addition, proofreading checks for correct use of synonyms which are often the curse of writers whose native language is not English.
If you are a student, making sure your thesis or dissertation is delivered in error-free English can help ensure you get the grade all your hard work deserves. For websites, you know that there’s nothing worse than visiting a website which has spelling and grammatical errors throughout – this is one of the greatest causes of missed business opportunities.

How it works
If you have not had any text proofread before, you may be wondering how you can tell what has been changed, or if anything has been checked at all. For all text provided in Word.doc or Word.docx format, proofreading and editing is done using MS Word 'Trackchanges'.
Trackchanges is a simple and effective tool which highlights all changes made to a text, showing the original text with a strike-through, and the new text in colour. Trackchanges leaves the option to accept or reject any changes made. If you have not used Trackchanges before, watch this short instructional YouTube video which will show you how simple and effective it is to use.
Often, more commercially based copy comes in Adobe PDF format. In this instance, sticky notes and a highlighter are used to indicate where text needs to be corrected and what the corrections shoould be. Word.doc or Word.docx is still the preferred format if possible.
If you are unable to provide text in either of these formats, arrangements can be made for editing in LaTex or by using Google Docs.
